{"id":687,"date":"2026-07-20T01:11:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T15:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/?p=687"},"modified":"2026-07-13T15:34:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T05:34:00","slug":"the-greatest-commandment-christopagan-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/the-greatest-commandment-christopagan-love\/","title":{"rendered":"The Greatest Commandment: Love at the Heart of ChristoPaganism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Merry Meet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone asked us to summarise the teachings of Jesus in only a few words, we would not need to begin with complicated theology, lengthy rules or centuries of religious debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We could begin with one simple word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Love.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest, He answered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: \u2018Love your neighbour as yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Matthew 22:37\u201339<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These words have echoed through the centuries, inviting each generation to consider what it truly means to live a spiritual life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many ChristoPagans, the Greatest Commandment is not merely one Christian teaching among many. It is the foundation upon which the entire spiritual journey is built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Love Comes Before Judgement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is easy for spiritual communities to become caught up in deciding who is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which tradition is true?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which practice is acceptable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who belongs, and who does not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus brings us back to something far more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love your neighbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else must grow from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When love becomes our spiritual compass, we become slower to judge and more willing to listen. We begin to see people not as labels, arguments or problems to solve, but as fellow human beings carrying their own stories, hopes, wounds and sacred worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is central to the mission of <a href=\"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/what-is-hugs-across-the-cosmos\/\">Hugs Across The Cosmos<\/a>. We believe spirituality should build bridges rather than walls and should help people feel welcomed rather than condemned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loving God with the Whole Self<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not say that we should love God with only our minds or only through formal worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He spoke of loving God with the whole self:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This suggests a relationship that touches every part of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may express that love through prayer, Scripture, song or worship. We may also experience it while walking through a forest, watching the moon rise, caring for a garden or sitting quietly beside the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a ChristoPagan, the sacred is not restricted to the inside of a church. God may be encountered in prayer and ritual, in ancient words and changing seasons, in candlelight and birdsong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our article <a href=\"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/why-nature-matters-in-christopagan-spirituality\/\">Why Nature Matters in ChristoPagan Spirituality<\/a> explores how the beauty of creation can deepen rather than replace a relationship with the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loving Our Neighbours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second part of the Greatest Commandment is wonderfully practical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Love your neighbour as yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our neighbour is not only the person who lives next door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our neighbour may be someone of another religion, culture, gender identity or sexual orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our neighbour may vote differently, worship differently or understand the world differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our neighbour may even be someone we find difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love does not require us to agree about everything. It asks us to recognise the dignity of another person even when our beliefs differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes love looks like generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it looks like listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it means offering forgiveness, setting a healthy boundary or choosing not to respond with cruelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love is not always sentimental. Often, it is a deliberate choice to treat another person with the kindness and respect we would hope to receive ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Greatest Commandment and the Golden Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greatest Commandment sits beautifully alongside another teaching of Jesus commonly known as the Golden Rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIn everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Matthew 7:12<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, these teachings give us a simple foundation for everyday spiritual living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love your neighbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treat others as you wish to be treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These ideas also resonate with the ethical wisdom found in the Wiccan Rede:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAn it harm none, do what ye will.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we explored in <a href=\"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/what-is-christopaganism\/\">What is ChristoPaganism?<\/a>, these teachings arise from different traditions, yet each encourages compassion, personal responsibility and thoughtful awareness of how our choices affect others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many ChristoPagans, this shared concern for love and non-harm becomes a bridge between Christian and Pagan spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loving Creation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greatest Commandment can also shape our relationship with the natural world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we love the Creator, it follows that we should treasure creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we love our neighbours, we should care about the air they breathe, the water they drink and the world future generations will inherit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caring for creation need not begin with grand gestures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may begin with planting flowers for bees, avoiding unnecessary waste, caring for animals, supporting environmental restoration or treating the land beneath our feet with gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature is not merely scenery surrounding human life. It is an interconnected community of living beings upon which we all depend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within ChristoPagan spirituality, creation care can become an act of devotion: a way of expressing love for God, neighbour and the Earth together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loving Yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another part of the commandment that people sometimes overlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus said to love your neighbour <strong>as yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not encourage selfishness. It recognises that healthy love must also include compassion for our own humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people are far kinder to friends and strangers than they are to themselves. They forgive others while carrying shame for their own mistakes. They encourage others to rest while believing they must constantly prove their worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet you, too, are a neighbour deserving of kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loving yourself may mean resting without guilt, seeking help when you need it, speaking to yourself gently or remembering that your value is not measured by constant productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may mean creating a quiet place for prayer and reflection, as described in <a href=\"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/creating-a-sacred-space\/\">Creating a Sacred Space<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-compassion does not make us less loving. It replenishes the heart so that we can offer love without becoming empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Living the Greatest Commandment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beauty of the Greatest Commandment is that it can be lived anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not need a pulpit, a temple or a perfect spiritual practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every ordinary day presents opportunities to choose love:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listening without immediately interrupting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offering encouragement to someone who is struggling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sharing food with a person in need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Welcoming someone who has felt excluded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apologising when we have caused hurt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protecting a person being treated unfairly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caring for an animal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Planting something that will outlive us.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choosing patience when irritation would be easier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remembering that every person carries a story we cannot fully see.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These actions may appear small, but love has never depended upon spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single act of kindness can alter the direction of someone\u2019s day. Sometimes it can alter the direction of a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Love as the Heart of ChristoPaganism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newagehugs.com\/christopaganblog\/what-is-christopaganism\/\">ChristoPaganism<\/a> means different things to different people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some ChristoPagans feel deeply connected to Jesus while also celebrating the Wheel of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some pray with Christian language while finding sacred meaning in Pagan ritual and mythology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some honour saints, ancestors, angels, gods or goddesses in ways shaped by their own spiritual understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no single practice shared by every ChristoPagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet love offers a common foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love reminds us to approach both Christianity and Paganism respectfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love encourages curiosity rather than ridicule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love welcomes people who are questioning, learning or healing from difficult religious experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love asks us to build bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At its best, ChristoPaganism is not an argument about which tradition should win. It is a sincere spiritual journey seeking to honour Christ, creation, wisdom and compassionate living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grace for the Journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of us lives the Greatest Commandment perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We become impatient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We make assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We speak too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sometimes fail to offer others\u2014or ourselves\u2014the kindness that was needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spiritual path is not about pretending we never stumble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is about noticing, learning and beginning again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace reminds us that failure does not have to be the final word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every new morning offers another opportunity to choose love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is why the Greatest Commandment remains so powerful. It is simple enough to remember, yet deep enough to guide an entire lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf31 Gentle Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning of each day this week, pause and ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How can I show love today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your answer may be something quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A message to a lonely friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A patient conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prayer for someone who is struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kinder response to your own reflection in the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small act of care for the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever form it takes, allow love to become more than an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it become a practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf19 A Blessing for Your Journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May your path be filled with light, your heart with love, and your spirit with peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May you find wisdom in both the ancient forests and the sacred scriptures, hope in every new sunrise, and kindness in every soul you meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wherever your spiritual journey leads, may you always know that you are welcome here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>Hugs Across The Cosmos<\/strong>, we celebrate all who seek with open hearts.
